Friday Orginal Poem

"Now to home without looking back, enough is enough."
-Jim Harrison from the poem, Broom, published in Songs of Unreason

Spring Cleaning

It's all part of my day to sweep morning breakfast crumbs
out the south facing slider onto the melting snow fringed in ice
where grass will be soon
where the fallen pines you carved into garden posts
stand guard in formation.

A walk to the mailbox slosh and slop in mud puddles,
eyes up to the treetops searching for bird signs
finch calls summoning spring,
beckoning me to do more cleaning.

As if the swish of my broom, the pass of my hand
on the slope of the tub like the back of a whale
can wash away the winter heavy grief
still clinging to my goulashes.

Friday Original Poem

This one goes out to my hubby, Tim! Happy Valentine's Day, love.

You love me guzzling kale juice.
You love me munching chocolate-covered potato chips
You love me in a bottle of Willamette Valley pinot noir.
You love me in sauna sweat meditation.
You love me mascara dripping.
You love me flat lips wide across my teeth.
You love me gestating.
You love me breastfeeding.
You love me tombstone dusting.
You love me when I don’t have time to love you.
When I am motherhood bee-hiving, bleeding onto paper,
collecting species in binoculars, harboring roller derby dreams.
When I start, when I finish, when I don’t begin, when I give up.
When I am yelling screaming, cowering and singing lullabyes.
Loving you is easy because loving me is not.
Because we are,
always have been, always will be.

With all my heart, your Regina

Friday Original Poem

Oswald West Beach

Where I lost it all
to a sea anemone, three starfish,
two orange, one purple,
to the surfer roasting
abalone over open flames.

Sent it all
back into the sea that
salt-stained my pant cuffs,
washed me.

Collected caves,
indents in the earth
where I fit.

Vowed to the lines of petrified logs –
benches in waiting –
where I sat spreading waves
on the day’s toast.

Friday Original Poem

Last Friday we began our new schedule of posting an original poem every week! Today's poem is from Regina. She wrote it in a poetry therapy session. It is an ekphrastic poem meaning it was inspired by another art form and in this case a photograph.

Open

Shuttters open,
invitation to look out at
a spring offering.

Open for oppurtunity,
 for light to burst through,
create a place to bathe
in the day's goodness.

And yet,
I keep a pane
of glass between us.

Uneasy at the thought
of opening the window.

Content with a view,
without vulnerabiltiy.

Able to distance
from a breeze of disaster
or raindrops,my tears of brokeness,
as I wait for the light to return.
