Good Advice

This week, I thought that I would pass along some good advice that my writing teacher, Mort Castle, gave me.  He's been a successful working writer for forty years so this tip (as he would say) is gold!

Shop your work by having ten submissions out at all times.

This advice really doesn't apply to novels as much as short works but if you have ten novels then, yes, include them in your total.

It also gets a bit muddy if you have an agent who shops your work but, again, you can choose to count whatever she has out in your total.

Here are a few places you might consider submitting to:

1. Poets and Writers has a great page dedicated to updates on writing contests.
2. Writers Digest
3. Checkout FreelanceWriting.com

This is not brain surgery, I know, but it's a really good goal.  And after producing so much poetry last month, I have some good stuff to submit to magazines and contests.  How about you?

And one last advice share - Neil Gaiman says, when things get tough, the answer is to "make good art."

If you combine the two, you will have made good art that gets published!
